Health Resolutions for 2010!

Did you accomplish everything that you wanted to this year professionally and personally? If you are like me, there is nothing better than setting a goal and actually following through and having the aspiration be achieved. So, instead of saying the ‘R’ word, I challenge you to aim high and set attainable health goals that you have for the new decade and beyond! If you are looking for goals, than this is the best article for you since we’re going to outline some to complete.

Exercise: Oftentimes easier said than done, but still extremely important to achieve at least thirty minutes a day of physical activity. Joining a gym is always an option, as long as you commit at least three times a week. Other choices for exercise include:

  • Check www.craigslist.org for used treadmills, elliptical or recumbent bikes
  • A mini trampoline, otherwise known as a “Rebounder” is a great aerobic workout since it is easy on the knees and promotes lymph drainage
  • Resistance exercise band and/or dumbbells
  • BOSU for aerobics and/or weight and core training

Increase Knowledge of Food Terms: Committing yourself and your family to eat a healthy diet requires work and knowledge, and many times you want to buy “nutritious” foods but you don’t know what to buy and what words to avoid. Let’s look at some trendy phrases to help increase your knowledge.

  • Gluten-Free: From a business perspective, the gluten free market is ripe for opportunity because more and more individuals are becoming wheat sensitive, and there have been an influx of gluten-free products from pizza dough to mustard. Exactly, what is gluten, and why are people interested? Dr. David Brownstein wrote a book, “The Guide to a Gluten-Free Diet,” which is a very easy read, and he informs us that gluten is a series of proteins that are found in grains including wheat, barley, and rye. If you do have a gluten sensitivity than the following grains should be avoided:

Barley

Bulgur

Couscous

Durum

Einkom

Kamut

Malt

Semolina

Spelt

Triticale

Rye

Wheat bran

Wheat germ

Wheat starch

It is surprising how many food products have gluten (sauces, bouillon cubes, lunchmeat, etc.). However, if you have a gluten sensitivity, gluten free options are becoming more prevalent, but remember to always read the labels.

  • Chia Seeds: Chia what? The chia seed is the only unprocessed, whole food source of Omega 3-Essential Fatty Acids. Omega 3 chia seeds absorb more than ten times its weight in water, lengthens hydration, and enhances endurance.

Reach your ideal weight: If you are not at the weight that you want to be, first, know that you can lose weight, but also know that it is going to require changing your diet, thoughts, and actions. Weight gain can be attributed to high stress, food additives that stress the liver, lack of exercise, gall bladder removal that creates poor fat metabolism, and drinking water from an unsecured pure source. Now if you are determined to lose weight, know that it is going to be a process. First steps include:

  • What is the condition of your thyroid? The thyroid is key for optimal weight. Picture the thyroid gland as the ‘fire’ in your body that is needed to burn efficiently using the extra calories that you may have consumed. When your thyroid does not have enough fuel in the form of iodine, oil, and protein, the fire will turn to a ‘flicker’ and you will not be able to burn off the extra calories. Also, it is suggested that a large amount of the world’s population have a low functioning thyroid gland. As a side note, the amino acid or protein that is very important for thyroid and emotional health is called tyrosine that assists in the restoration of thyroid function. Tyrosine and iodine are the two main components of the thyroid hormone.

  • Minerals, Minerals, Minerals. Instead of eating processed food, focus on organic, whole, unpackaged. The opposite creates food that has a lack of essential nutrients and minerals. Important minerals that our body needs include selenium, manganese, and zinc. Selenium and manganese are needed for hormone gland function, especially with pituitary (the hormone gland in the brain that tells other organs what to do) function. Zinc is an important mineral for insulin production, healing, memory, and prostate health in men.
